Link to The Winter Range Pictorial

February 25-28, 2013

Started working in the shop to straighten it out. The roof leakage is more complicated than anticipated. First I have to get everything put away so I can work on the ceiling seams. Water is coming through AC unit and comes out the ceiling seams.

WINTER RANGE 2013
February 16-17, 2013

Fire and Ice at Cowtown. Shot awfully bad. Got the backup .38-55 Buffalo Classic from Johnny Meadows.

Went to Winter Range and got my packet.

New facade at the Winter Range main tent. One story, much less dangerous to put up and take down and less likely to blow over in high wind

Last practice session went well.

Sunshine today. Practiced with a group shooting stages. Then ran a fool's errand for an hour. Boyd's stock for the Cimarron '97 finally arrived. The stock was in bad shape when I got the gun, and the guys at Cimarron promised me a new one. Gave up and bought a Boyd's because it was likely to come apart at any time. It took about minutes to put it on, which was a lot less than the last one ordered from Brownell's. Order the Boyd's from Boyd's. Spent a lot more time re-lacing the Mernickle butt cover than putting the stock on.

February 10-11, 2013

Cowtown was closed Sunday, so I worked in the garage and listened to a couple of disks from "Mental Management for Shooting Sports."

Monday went to Cowtown. It started raining as I arrived, and no one else was there or showed up. Practiced, then went to the hearing aid place. My right hearing aid was back from the factory, where they replaced it. It does work better than the other one was before it died.

I shot the Plainsman rifle this morning and had a couple of cartridges that wouldn't go in, and one that wouldn't extract. Made some more ammo afterwards and tested them all in the barrel of the rifle (TAKE THE BARREL OFF to do this). Some wouldn't go in. Ran them through the sizing die with the decapper removed. Match ammo, still to be made, will use new brass, and all rounds will get this extra resizing plus chamber checking. With only Tues and Wed to practice, it's time to go ahead and make the match ammo. (Won't have the back-up .38-55 from Johnny Meadows until Friday, which will make it hard to test it).

Haven't seen this in a while. The gate was closed at 0815. That's when the rain started

New temporary stage 1. Fire and Ice requires 12 stages

Angelique didn't want The Redhead to play online poker

Shot 8 stages at the ACSA match, big field, as expected. This is Fort Sinclair, one of the spectacular permanent sets at Ben Avery built for Winter Range

Coosie's is another beautiful permanent set. We spend the winter on the other side of that mountain.

Finished last year is the Saloon. It should be there a while. Very well built.

inside the saloon is a bar on one side and a piano on the other

Got my primary '73 back from Johnny Meadows. He put in a new bolt and did a black powder crown on the barrel. It worked perfectly during the match.

What are the cats staring at?

Perhaps they're staring at the neighbor's house?

Met Hopalong Harry at Cowtown at 0815. The place was pretty busy. We shot stages until he ran out of shotgun ammo. not as successful as yesterday. I blame it on the smoke. Harry has no excuse. B-western, 2 hands, smokeless, .38s, '97.

Worked in the shop after that. The shop is chaos. I have so much to do and so little space. So I shove things aside in order to do what I need to do, load, clean, repair, etc.

On Tuesday the front sight came off my rifle. Larsen found it, but to get it back on needed to put the barrel in a vise. That meant removing the turret press so that there was room for the rifle. Cleaned the slot and the sight, used a punch to tap the center of the edge of the dovetail down front and back to tighten it up, put red Loctite in, and tapped the sight in until centered. It's still there.

Yes, had to put the turret press back up to load .38-55. It's hard to get very far ahead with a turret press. I got 1000 rounds of bullets and 500 rounds of brass, so theoretically I could load 500 at a time. But (a) the RCBS press has something break every time you look at it, and (b) 50 rounds takes most of an hour. Right now waiting for a new decapping die shaft. The old one got bent. Straightened it enough to use and ordered another. 57 minutes on hold to get to an RCBS rep. Also have another expander insert on the way. Loading .380 dia. rounds leaves a bulge on the case, but it's not concentric. Tried everything else.

I'm shooting 30-50 rounds of .38-55 each practice session (the target is to load and fire 5 rounds at 25 yd targets in under 15 seconds, almost there). I need to make the match ammo.

Shooting .45 Colt in the conversion cylinders on the ROAs. The ROAs are harder to shoot than new Vaqueros and take 1-2 seconds longer or 10 rounds, but getting closer.

February 5-6, 2013

Got to practice both days a couple of hours. On Wednesday came early and shot stages with Hopalong Harry. Very productive

Just a note: we had gotten the ThermaCare package at Wally World, $7.97. Needed another one and was in the neighborhood of a Walgreens. $7.79--BUT there were 2 in the package, where Wally World had 3.

Got some practice in afterwards.

I won the shirt at Bordertown

added the protective covers to the gun mounts on the cart. They hold the guns more firmly as well as having terry padding

a lot of stuff goes in the Jeep for shooting

Cowboy match at Cowtown, 6 posses, 126 shooters. Did a little better than the WB match, 2 misses due to trying to shoot through the awful smoke this place has at times, then one for no reason.

Two Dot's Wild Bunch gun cart... unique

Wild Bodie Tom's hat has business cards from several Nevada cat houses

Survived the Wild Bunch match at Cowtown. The ThermaCare seemed to help.

Up and around enough to get The Redhead a rental car for the weekend and to get ready for the Wild Bunch match at Cowtown tomorrow.
